Michael Cole of ‘The Mod Squad’ and ‘General Hospital’ dies

(NEXSTAR) — Michael Cole, well-known for his roles in “The Mod Squad” and “General Hospital,” has died, according to his publicist. He was 84.

Cole, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, “passed away peacefully” Tuesday morning, a press release shared with Nexstar said. No cause of death was listed.

Cole’s early roles included appearing in episodes of “Gunsmoke” and “Run for Your Life” in the 1960s. Later on, he starred in the crime drama series “The Mod Squad,” playing the troubled youth Pete Cochran.

Cole wrote in his 2009 memoir, “I Played the White Guy,” that he did not initially want the role in “The Mod Squad.” He even admitted to telling producer Aaron Spelling that the show sounded “stupid” and that he hoped “it never gets on the air,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He would go on to appear in more than 100 episodes of “The Mod Squad.”

After the show ended in 1973, Cole made appearances on “Wonder Woman,” “The Love Boat, and “Murder, She Wrote,” his IMDb shows. He would later be cast as Harlan Barrett in “General Hospital,” appearing in more than 60 episodes before being killed off in 1991.

His last acting credits include 2010 roles in shorts “Father’s Day” and “Officer Lenot in: Showtime.”

“Beyond his career, Michael Cole will be remembered for his warm and generous spirit. Known among friends and family for his wit, charm, and boundless compassion, he brought joy to every room he entered,” his publicist, Rachel Harris, said in a statement. “A storyteller at heart, he had a way of making those around him feel special, often regaling them with anecdotes from his Hollywood days or sharing wisdom from his remarkable journey.”

Cole is survived by his wife, Shelley Funes, and his children.
