The General Hospital audience has had some pretty strong opinions about Drew — after bedding his enemy, Nina — turning around and kissing her daughter, Willow. Aside from the “ick” factor of Drew’s romantic entanglement with mother and daughter, Willow is married to his nephew, Michael!

As it turns out, Drew’s portrayer, Cameron Mathison, was caught off guard by the unconventional, controversial plot twist as well! “I do understand why it’s touched such a nerve with the audience. It touches a nerve with me, too,” he admitted to Soap Opera Digest. “But I also think it’s a really good soap storyline.”

Generally speaking, Mathison pointed out, Drew is a stand-up guy, even if his moral compass is skewed at the moment. “He’s cheating on his nephew, in a way. There are things he’s doing that are not in line with who he is,” the actor said of his character’s flip-flopping between Nina and Willow. “It doesn’t make sense to the audience. But I think we all know that not everybody is perfect all the time.”

Mathison pointed out that while Drew tried to fight his feelings for the two women, he couldn’t help but be drawn to them both. “I think that’s like real life. I think sometimes stuff like this happens,” he mused. “I also think that sometimes these are the greatest love stories ever when it’s the most unexpected and surprising direction.”

“I don’t think he means for the two people he’s being intimate with to be related — it’s not like it was a conscious decision,” the GH star said in defense of his character.

While he understands how viewers might have been taken aback by Drew’s actions, Mathison noted that people doing out-of-character things makes for good daytime drama. As do mothers and daughters sharing a love interest! “It’s not the first time a story like this has been played,” he pointed out.
