Death Becomes Her: General Hospital revealed the identity of Sam’s (Kelly Monaco) killer in flashback.
On Wednesday, October 30, General Hospital killed off one of its longest-running and most popular characters, Sam McCall, who had been played by Kelly Monaco since 2003. The mystery of what caused her demise kicked up a notch on Wednesday, November 20, when Portia revealed that according to Sam’s toxicology report, Sam died due to an overdose of digitalis — a medication, Liz noted, that Sam had not even been prescribed before she underwent surgery to donate part of her liver to Lulu
On the Monday, December 9 episode of General Hospital, the show filled in the blanks, revealing who administered the deadly dose of digitalis to Sam and how they did it.
At Rice Plaza, where he and Gio had helped Trina and Josslyn pick out a Christmas tree for their apartment, Dex encountered Cyrus. “I trust you’re obeying the restraining order, staying away from Mayor Collins and her family?” asked a suspicious Dex. “I am filling my day with good works,” Cyrus responded.
Dex challenged Cyrus when he claimed that he would respect his sister’s wishes, calling Cyrus out for having been at the hospital on Halloween, after Laura told Cyrus to stay away from Lulu. Cyrus insisted that he was merely delivering candy to the children’s wing. “And yet,” shot back Dex, “I saw you on the 10th floor, coincidentally where Lulu’s room was located.”
Cyrus didn’t flinch. “Hand to God, I was not there to see Lulu on Halloween,” he told Dex.
Dex appeared distracted when he rejoined Josslyn at her place, so she made an excuse for them to excuse themselves from tree-trimming with Gio and Trina. Back at his place, they discussed his unhappy childhood holidays, then made love.
Back at Rice Plaza, Cyrus continued to receive donations on behalf of the Port Charles Redemption Mission. Then, in flashback, he was shown sneaking stealthily into Sam’s hospital room, dressed in a white medical coat and a surgical mask. He was brandishing a vial of digitalis, which he was then shown injecting into the IV stream of a sleeping Sam.

Once the dastardly deed was done, Cyrus placed his hand on Sam’s forehead, causing her to rouse slightly. Cyrus then slipped back out of Sam’s room.

The episode ended on Sam, lying in her hospital bed as the toxic medicine that would soon claim her life began to work its way into her system. So, the question remains: Why did Cyrus murder Sam?
For now, it looks like viewers will have to wait for the show to answer that million-dollar question. Share your theories below!
